cut out a circular piece of paper about the size of a beermat. Write on it the name of the popular music ensemble that is playing of the record. For example in your case it may be Will Young Fridays child.

That would be the start of the record label

the next stage would be sticking it on.

First of all you need to work out what your interest is in starting one. If your main interest is in making money, forget it now, because there are too many big guns out there already doing that. If it is to promote the music you love and want to listen to, go ahead.

You will need to either operate a recording studio yourself, or buy into one so that they use your company name on their recordings. You need to find artists willing to pay you for your services who couldn't self produce easily. Then, you need to find a name, a logo and all the publicity you can get.

In my opinion self publishing/ promotion is what's new and happening in music and record labels will soon be a thing of the past. I would get into setting up a website for selling MP3s if I were you, more lucrative, and you still get to pick and choose the artists and music you loved.

My advice to you is to generate a list of 'independent' record labels operating in your locality and make enquiries to them on how they started up in business. Their doing what you would like to be, so they have the relevant experience and history you'll need for the journey. If they can't help you they might provide useful contacts..cause contacts seemed to be the name of the game in the music industry..It's not what you know but who you know!.
