AC tends to double your energy bill, although there are so many variables you'd be overwhelmed. In most cases AC left on overnight equals an iron left on overnight, so you'd better try and do without it if you can.

Air conditioning is similar to central heating, the same rules apply. The conditioning should be programmed to come on an hour or so BEFORE the room is to be used, and turned OFF an hour or so before everyone leaves.

Get a digital Thermostat and have it set to go on about 2-3 hour you arrive, this will give it enough time to cool down to the temperature you desire. You can also set it to go off 1-2 hour after you leave, this is just encase you do overtime. The some goes for the winter.

I would say it was a waste, but it depends on how large the room is and how long it would take to cool it back down again. Maybe just adjust the temperature so it would not run very much.

Sounds a real waste. Air con cools rooms down really quickly so no need to have it on all night.
Switch it off

Some people say that it is cheaper to leave it on during the night as it is only the room tempertaure it is trying to maintain. They say that if it was to cool it down in the morning it'll have to use more energy from that point. I don't know myself, but that's what they say. I think I go with your point of view rather than theirs.

It's wasting shedloads, air con doesn't take that long to work. YOu can work it out by finding out the price per kilowatt hour charged by your energy supplier and the number of kilowatt hours the air con uses when it's on.

A fair amount I would suggest. I know that car air conditioning increases fuel consumption by about 20%

No, not at all. It'll take more energy to start it up again to get it to that cool level than it will to leave it on. Of course I'm just BS'in but it sounded good.
