It depends in what you consider to be a lie. In life you actually have people that believe that "stretching the truth" is not lying. Basically it is all up to what you think. I guess lying can be marked by nervousness, the inability to look you in the eye, or shiftiness. However, you must also keep in mind that some people have mastered the art of controlling all these.

Without a polygraph machine at your disposal you can tell if someone is lying to you by the flinch in their eyes when they're telling the lie at that exact moment and also when their voice gets a bit heavier in tone. Usually they don't look at you when they're lying or if they do the flinch would be there.
If someone is lying to you as they believe they are doing so in your best interest, then it is much more difficult to tell.

Well, people in general don't lie well. Most of the time, they will keep repeating the story over and over. Like they are trying to convince themselves they are telling the truth. Some won't look you in the eyes, some actually can and do. Most of the time, if the story sounds too big to believe, it usually is!

Sometimes they don't look you in the eyes. Sometimes they look too hard into your eyes. Listen to the tone of their voice. People get easily defensive when they are lying. Also, sometimes their eyes dart back and forth.

When they look to the left, they're lying. If they look to the right, they are just searching for memory recall.
