I've never seen this happen. Maybe the same way blacks turn down Barry Manilow when they see white people coming. The fear of having something in common with someone you don't like.

I can't help you with this question, because I don' t listen to rap music. I do listen to other music and I do turn it down when other people come near. That is called being polite!! No one likes having to yell over any kind of music. I think that blacks and whites are alike that way. Being polite is the same, no matter what color you are! Polite people are considerate of other people's feelings, no one should have their music so loud that it disturbs the people who don't like it. Yes, me included!

There are two main schools of thought about this strange phenomenon. 1) Guilt at the brazen rape and piracy of black culture, and 2) Dis-ease at being caught listening to lyrics that typically do not reflect any reality of white life experience.

My personal belief is that the action you describe is mainly driven by the fear of a black fist.

i cant rap either, i just listen to a bit of everything. I too cant relate to being shot. When people rap, why they gotta go get out a gun for nothing! Its like that part in Scary movie 3, it looks degrading!

No, you're a weirdo! If you are ashamed at what you listen to, then don't listen to it. I turn my music down because it may be too loud, but not because of what I'm listening to. Race doesn't even play a part. You like what you like, and dislike what you dislike, end of story!

Anybody should turn down their music when anyone else approaches so you can hear what they are saying. It is only polite.
