it is japanese and chinese
there are japanese words but they are written with the chinese kanji. sometimes in chinese they have the same meaning, sometimes they do not. if you want to get a japanese kanji tattoo you can use this site to translate. I use it to do my japanese homework,
http://dict.regex.info/cgi-bin/j-e/jis/tty/dict
but usually in japanese two or more kanji's are used to denote meaning, whereas in chinese often times only one kanji is used-- usually this is the usage of kanji you see people wearing
also there are more than one type of chinese-- cantonese and mandarin, and the kanji mean different things in these different types of chinese as well
but you should consult a person who actually really speaks japanese to make sure that it is appropriate, and carries the message you want. that way you don't look like an idiot to someone who can read kanji! this should be a long-thought out (like hang a picture of the tattoo on a wall for a year, if you can't live with it on your wall for a year, then you can't live with it on your body for the rest of your life) and well-reasearched decision, afterall its the body you'll have for the rest of your life!
good luck, and i hope i helped :D
side note: someone posted that 月光舞蹈家 means moonlight dancer in chinese, it means this in japanese as well. but you should be aware that this can mean prostitute. after all the kanji compound 舞蹈家 means dancer, but it also means mistress. 月光 means moonlight or moonbeam. alone these kanji mean 月moon 光 energy/ spirit 舞蹈 (compound) dancing 家 shop/house. also it is written moolight: ketsukoo dancer: buyooka or you can just look up moonlight and dancer, if you can't see the kanji here. you may not be able to see the kanji on the website, but it will probably ask you if you want to download something so you can see kanji, but you might not have to download something to see it.

Kanji is Japanese.
Written Japanese uses three separate alphabets (four if you count "romaji", our standard 26-letter English alphabet). Hey, come back! It's not that bad; don't worry.
Two of the three are syllabic. They are called hiragana and katakana, and consist of fairly simple characters used to represent syllables. Hiragana and katakana are known collectively as "kana".
Kanji, however, are more complicated / difficult / beautiful / fascinating. Read a bit further and choose your own adjective

yes, kanji is japanese. in japanese, there are 3 types of writting: hiragana, katakana and kanji.
kanji is the one which looks similar to the chinese letters. the other two are more or less considered as "school-writtings".
