Because no real phone numbers here begin with 555.

If you want information, you can dial the area code + 555-1212. This is also a good number to use when filling out web forms that require a phone number.

The 555 numbers used are reserved by the phone company for their own use. If someone were to call the numbers used on TV and in films that start with 555, they would end up speaking with someone at the phone company! I think the phone companies did reserve a block of numbers in the 555-xxxx range that will never be assigned to real people so they can be used in TV and films with no real consequences.

Because if they didn't and your number just happened to match some made up number in a movie, then you'd get a bunch of nut jobs trying to call you at all hours of the day. Since 555 isn't a real area code, there is no harm/no foul.

Because 555 is not a valid prefix for 'real' phone numbers. There's always some idiot who likes to call the numbers that are given out in movies and TV shows, so they created a fake prefix to stop that.

I just saw that someone said it was fake. It is actually not a fake number, It is a dummy number. Sometimes if you call the number you will get a recording about the movie or about a website to go to, most of the time you get an operator (i should know, I worked for AT&T for too long and we would always get people calling stating that they saw this number in a movie and wanted to call it).

Because it's the only three digit prefix that does not exist in America and they don't want to accidentally use someones real phone number for fear of law suits.
