No, they do not.
While the lines between what adware, spyware and viruses are have been fading a bit, there are still a lot of differences.
Adware - is code used to place advertisements on your computer, usually through Internet Explorer interface. Adware is the least risky of virus types, although someone open doors on your computer to download advertisements, so could be used to download more malicious code.
Spyware - is code used to spy on the activities of your computer. For example, spying on what websites you visit, what credit card information you use online, what banking info you use...etc. It is the primary type of virus used for identity theft.
You should also understand that no single anti-virus software can catch all viruses. However, Norton Symantec anti-virus versions 10+ now also looks for most adware and spyware.
I'm a security professional, and use Norton, AVG, Ad-aware and Spybot, all 4, keeping each up to date and running them often.
If I visit sites that I don't know, I will run them immediately.
With today's internet, you are better off having as many protections in place as possible, IMHO.
UPDATE and RUN your protective software constantly.
Good luck.

No anti-spy detects the exact same malware as another. Since there is no "standard" definition of just what a spyware is, every vendor's product is a little different.
Plus, Spybot has an active function called Tea-Timer which attempts to alert you to any changes that a spyware is making to your system before it can do its damage. The free version of AdAware does not have this feature.

They detect the same ones, yes. But the update definitions come at different times and they will always be catching things that the other one misses.
