Neither is secure. Email if properly incripted is the most secure. Voice communication in code is the only secure method of communication on either land line or cell.

There are pros and cons with both.

The landline is thought to be more secure because it is not going over the air waves however anyone can use a telephone test set and go inside of the phone box and tap your line without your awareness.

Likewise the cell might be more secure because you would need some really sophisticated equipment to decode the digital signal.

Either way, technicians who work on both types of technology have the legal right to tap in and listen to your conversation for "maintainence and repair" purposes and if you are discussing something that you do not want someone else to hear you are better off talking to them in person.

Landlines are more secure, simply because of statistics.

With a cellphone your conversation is getting beamed around a large area, so in theory anyone within range of the phone could tap it.

Landlines however, go through a distinct path (eg the line) and thus less people have access to them. Coupled with the fact that most telephone lines are now underground it would be harder for someone to tap.

If you are talking however about the government tapping your phone, I would say both are as unsafe as each other, because at the end of the day the FBI could get access to the telephone exchanges where all telephone conversations pass through.

And what Law are you going to break that you need this information? LOL

Land line MUCH more secure.

I have an older scanner that picks up old style cell phone calls. They are illegal to sell, but not illegal to own if you purchased before the law went in to affect. Which I did.

It also picks up "Cordless Phones" used in many homes today.

No phone is truly secure- be it landline or cellular. When I was in the USAF, all our phone receivers had stickers on them reminding us that calls could be monitored.

I knew that they could be monitored, because part of my job was to check the voice level channels on our wideband radio equipment for quality assurance and that they were within noise parameters. And yes, that meant plugging a jack into 'live' lines. This was analog gear, but it would not surprise me at all to know that there are VF level breakouts on digital lines, too.

A land line.

All one needs to do is install a chip for the 900 MH (?) range in their scanner and your calls can be listened in on.

This type of chip is usually only available to law enforcement, but there are ways to get around that and it does happen.
