Yes yes you can

Sure in our excess of recourses and gluttony we can just say death is wrong. We can say every time a dies it is wrong. That every time someone dies of cancer, heart disease, or something else that it should have been prevented. Death happens so seldom now and usually at an old age when you are not as close to active people so we forget it is a natural part of life.

Right now many countries have gone away from the death penalty, but barring someone getting cold fusion to work I guarantee it will make a comeback in the next 100 years. When oil starts to run low and we can no longer feed everyone. Things like keeping psycho murders alive till they are 90 in a cage that takes a lot of people to guard them who could be doing more productive tasks will lose its appeal.

Life in prison instead of death is a luxury of excess not a measure of civilization.

An eye is for an eye. This is part of the justice. If we spare the murderer's life, a big door will be opened for those to commit their crimes in the absence of the capital punishment.Life imprisonment will be for their own sake. They will have a free room and accommodations for life, and they might continue plotting against innocent people from behind the bars. Being civilized won't contradict with establishing justice and peace in society by applying the right punishment for the crime.

A civilized country still requires order. A country is considered civilized if it doesn't commit atrocity against its citizens. Death penalty is necessary to punish those who violates the civil rights of other citizens.

Civilized means showing evidence of moral and intellectual advancement; humane, ethical, and reasonable and to achieve all these the governing bodies has to impose laws to prevent people commiting heinous crimes and for preventing these crimes it's necessary that the guilty be punished. the severe the crime the severe should be the punishment and some crimes are truly unforgivable like murder etc.so yes death penality is absolutely necessary to keep our societies and countries civilised.

may be you are talking of an ideal country where all ppl are educated and no person commits any crime whatsoever
but if you just an civilised country with all sorts of elements in it you need to have law which suits every crime and punishment ranging with the severity of crime

Yes. Some people are just too dangerous to live in society. And a life sentence usually does not mean life in prison. Usually you get out at some point.

Yes. Sometimes it is not the right thing to do by just putting someone away. Sometimes to protect the people you must remove the problem permanently.

For those who disgaree please explain what you are doing to speed up the construction of maximum security prisons next to your home to contain all the killers society is breeding.

Can you have a civilized society with a large portion of its people behind bars?

What do you want murderers and criminals to go free among you?

It is a stupid argument.

Civilization comes at a price and that price is obedience. Criminals are not obedient.

Why not? It would seem that it's your arbitrary definition that "civilized" means no death penalty.

Where does that come from?

Why do people think that 20th-21st C views define "civilized"?

If you're talking philosophy, you should start by defining your terms. Or at least understand why you use them as you do.

Short answer: yes.

I think so because if not your country will be overrun with prisons and prisoners. There have to be consequences that meet the severity of the crime!
