Israel is not pro-peace. The stated objective has always been to subjugate the Arab peoples.* Israel is a very aggressive, racist, and genocidal country that was built on land forcibly taken from the Arabs (in 1948 alone over 400 Arab villages were destroyed by the Zionists, and the inhabitants either killed outright or driven off the land). Today Israel still occupies most of the West Bank, has built walls and fences cutting off even more Arab land, has used so-called "jewish settlers" as a military tool to claim Arab land by adverse possession, and has done everything it can to inflict pain and sufering on Arab civilians. It has been able to do this because the United States stands blindly behind it, so that today the US/Israel is viewed as one country my many Arabs.
What the Israelis call "self-defense" when they inflict it on others they deem "terrorism" when others inflict it upon them, a gross hypocrisy that the US supports unquestioningly.
The solution to the current crisis lies NOT in disarming Hezbollah. Hezbollah is not the cause of the problem, Hezbollah is the response to the problem, and the problem is, and always has been, aggression, invasions, and occupations by Israel. US Sec of State Rice's trip to the Middle East is a fundamental waste of time because she has no understanding of the real problem and keeps harping the Israeli line over and over, and this is not and never has been a solution at all. She will come away having achieved absolutely nothing because she is saying all the wrong things, just as the Israelis have been doing all the wrong things for decades. There will never be peace under these circumstances.
The problem is Israeli acts of violence and aggression over the past seven decades and is evidenced by the jewish attitude towards the Arabs:
*"We have to kill all the Palestinians unless they are resigned to live here as slaves." Chairman Heilbrun of the Committee for the Re-election of General Shlomo Lahat, the mayor of Tel Aviv, October 1983.
"We declare openly that the Arabs have no right to settle on even one centimeter of Eretz Israel... Force is all they do or ever will understand. We shall use the ultimate force until the Palestinians come crawling to us on all fours." Rafael Eitan, Chief of Staff of the Israeli Defense Forces - Gad Becker, Yediot Ahronot 13 April 1983, New York Times 14 April 1983.
"We should prepare to go over to the offensive. Our aim is to smash Lebanon, Trans-Jordan, and Syria. The weak point is Lebanon, for the Moslem regime is artificial and easy for us to undermine. We shall establish a Christian state there, and then we will smash the Arab Legion, eliminate Trans-Jordan; Syria will fall to us. We then bomb and move on and take Port Said, Alexandria and Sinai." David Ben-Gurion, May 1948, to the General Staff. From Ben-Gurion, A Biography, by Michael Ben-Zohar, Delacorte, New York 1978.
"We must use terror, assassination, intimidation, land confiscation, and the cutting of all social services to rid the Galilee of its Arab population." Israel Koenig, "The Koenig Memorandum"
"Jewish villages were built in the place of Arab villages. You do not even know the names of these Arab villages, and I do not blame you because geography books no longer exist. Not only do the books not exist, the Arab villages are not there either. Nahlal arose in the place of Mahlul; Kibbutz Gvat in the place of Jibta; Kibbutz Sarid in the place of Huneifis; and Kefar Yehushua in the place of Tal al-Shuman. There is not a single place built in this country that did not have a former Arab population." Moshe Dayan, address to the Technion, Haifa, reported in Haaretz, April 4, 1969.
"We walked outside, Ben-Gurion accompanying us. Allon repeated his question, What is to be done with the Palestinian population?' Ben-Gurion waved his hand in a gesture which said 'Drive them out!'" Yitzhak Rabin, leaked censored version of Rabin memoirs, published in the New York Times, 23 October 1979.

The palestinians never had a land in israel. They especially never had any part of jerusalem. The jews lost israel to the romans, who lost it to nomadic tribes when their empire fell apart, who lost it to the english on conquest for the queen.
Basically it remained in english control until just before the world war. The palestinians were allowed to live there, but they had no rights, they were policed by england and by france. When the jews were fleeing europe due to persecution they formed a group called the zion something or other who convinced england to give israel its own state in the land of israel.
England was on the fritz with France, and france was a big supporter of this whole leaving israel thing, so england went along with it for the need of an ally in france.
They split israel, giving the palestines all the major cities and ports, all the fertile green lands (what tiny little bits there are) and then gave the jews all the desert and worthless lands. They did this because originally they gave the jews half of jerusalem and the palestinians imediately started amassing an army and attacking the english there. The jews wanted the europeans out, so they also put together a fighting group and attacked the palestinians and the english.
Finally, everyone ended up with a part of israel, and they all had to answer to europe. But that wasnt good enough. The palestinians started fighting right off the bat, israel went right along with it.
The palestinians have even less right to this land than the jews, who had it originally thousands of years ago. Although people who would becomes the palestinians did build up strong holds and settlements over the centuries, they never lasted, and they never completely took over the land.
Originally there was a land of Israel, and a land of Palestine. Palestine was lost as well, so the palestinians are also a displaced people.
So the whole, jews are coming in and taking over their land bit doesnt fly.

Hamas may be an elected government but it also has a terrorist wing which decides to kidnap Israeli soldiers and conduct cross-border raids on Israeli civilians. Israel then decides to move into Gaza in order provide security for its people, disrupt Hamas terrorists and they are the agressors??? I don't agree with everything Israel does either, but you need some objectivity!!!
