Technically there have been no banks that have gone under. Since the Great Depression and the wave of bank failures, the FDIC has been able to stop banks from going under normally by merging sick banks with other banks that are financially healthy. The FDIC has not let a bank fail without paying depositors. In the 1990's when the Resolution Trust Corporation was formed, there were bank closures but no depositors lost money as the failed banks were absorbed by other thrifts or savings institutions.
