Prosperity of a nation should not be confused with the quality of life of that nation. The UN created an index by which all nations were ranked according to the quality of life. It uses prosperity indices such as GNP but also looks at health care, education of women and a few other human factors to decide the ranking. Right now Finland ranks number 1, Canada 4, US 10 in the world.

Education of women would be expected to increase dramatically as the quality of life n a nation increases. This indicates that the culture is more open to women in nontraditional roles and that the general environment is less oppressive of individual rights. Look at middle east. The women are often somewhat educated but not given full status in society. However, there is considerable wealth and prosperity to be found (in the hands of some anyway). In this case prosperity as measured by GNP or assets is far from an accurate measure of individual freedom and the prosperity of the individual.

I don't think there is a direct correlation. There are many countries, which are not prosperous, and have well-educated women (and men). Examples: India, China, Cuba, Russia. Examples of countries that are prosperous without well-educated women: Saudi Arabia and every other oil-rich Middle Eastern country, Venezuela.
The only correlation I see is, if you have lots of oil, you don't need educated women. The money just flows in.

well, the model of most western European nation's and USA show that women, with an education and a chance to work add to the over all prosperity of the nation. In the US, it was recently stated the companies with women at the helm out numbered more tradition men run companies, but the glass ceiling still exists, but it is changing slowly.

Define properity. Living in a one room shack with just enough food in my belly in the middle of nowhere, no tv, no internet sounds like heaven to me. Can't wait til retirement and I can find my little shack and dump my car, my big dusty house, internet, tv, phone and the long commute to work and trade it in for a small vegetable garden, a small shack I can sweep out and a fishing pole. Imagine some so called poor people live like that daily. Hmmm, define prosperity...me thinks it is all in the perception of the individual.

And to Max..while I am cooking and cleaning...dear hubby will be chopping the wood, shoveling the snow and mowing the grass.

And to think it took a degree, and 30 years in the corporate world to figure out...than when all was said and done and retirement draws near I would be happier out in the boondocks living a more simplified life.
