Yes, my Geography teacher always pronounced it with the stress on the second syllable ( heem- AH -lee ah)- and she had lived in that area for a while.

We in England say "Him-ah-lay-ah" I have heard it pronounced in India as "Him-AHH-laya", with the stress on the second syllable.

himalay means the abode of ice..heem=ice ...alay.=place of dwelling..it is pronounced as...heem.alay..[alay as in malay]
