The usual standard is that the elevation has to be greater than 1000 feet for a hill to be a mountain.

BTW, that is the central story in the movie "The Englishman who went up a hill, but came dwon a mountain".

there is no 'standard' as some suggest

it is purely subjective and depends on local usage only

mostly a hill has to be bigger than other hills to be a mountain

if you don't beleive me, go look at the ozark mountains in arkansas
they all look like hills and none of them meet these 'standards'
they were however, once large mountains, but long before anybody ever came along to name them that

Houston, texas has Mount Houston...a really small hill

oxford dictionary limits it to 610m (2000 ft)
