You need to activate and run the scan for it to work.

Also it's imperative that you keep it current by regularly checking for updates.

EDIT:
Some programs that run in the background, and that assist you in warding off some computer threats are:

SpywareBlaster:

SpyCatcherExpress:

IE-Spyad:

But please don't be fooled into thinking that running these alone will keep you safe.

You will still need to run and scan with your anti-virus and other anti-malware programs like Spybot and Ewido because they all excel at some types of threats better than others. By having, and running several, you're more assured of having complete protection.

(One last point, you needn't worry about compatibility issues with running any of these programs together, because they're aren't any.)

Are you asking about Spybot Search & Destroy?

If so, you can configure it to run every time your PC starts up (go to the advanced mode) or you can do an on demand scan whenever you want.

SD&D has an add-on called Tea Timer that runs in real time. If any web page tries to "tamper" with your computer settings, Tea Timer will notify you and ask if you want to allow the change, etc.

You're given the opportunity of installing the TT option when you download SD&D so if you chose not to install it back then, you may be able to get it through their update options. The worst case scenario would be to uninstall SD&D, then download the program again. This time, check off the Tea Timer as an extra you'd like to have.

Tea Timer has saved both me and my PC many headaches by preventing "nasty boogers" from taking over - even before my anti-virus program noticed what was going on!

you do have to activate it and run it sometimes otherwise its not protecting your pc...you can also set up automatic updates once that's up and running you are protected all the time
