There are a few possible explanations. One is that that the DR and CR come from the Latin past participles of debitum and creditum which are "debere" and "credere". Some think that DR is short for "debit record" and CR for "credit record". And as mentioned some believe the DR notation is short for "debtor" and CR is short for "creditor".

CR and DR is easier to pronounce...I know because I'm an accounting student and we are one of those groups of students you see sitting around talking absolute gibberish.

And I think it is from creditors and debtors but I'm not sure.
