The competiion for the few superior positions such as leadership jobs, professional sports, media stars are all limited positions. This condition gauranttees mediocrity and failure. When schools and students are compared to one another inevitably some schools and students will fail just due to comparisons. So there will always be failure. We can only hope that the successful wil be compassionate with the not so successful.

It's not inevitable because the competition for limited things is a cultural phenomenon. If there's a lot of advertising for scarce goods or praise for limited positions, then yes, there will be competition for them. On the other hand, if you imagine a country with a religion (or just culture) in which they didn't put a lot respect on having many material possessions or titles, then you would have a different result. Buddhism was an attempt at such a culture, with some limited success - there's still a lot of advertising in Buddhist cultures, leading to a degree of materialism - the merchants, of course, need some way of making a living, and promoting materialism (at least for the goods they are selling) helps in that regard.
