I had balut several times. Most westerners are revolted but the taste is just salty egg, it's the sight that usually makes them puke. Take a fertilised chicken egg, let the embryo grow for about 15 days then boil it in heavily salted water. When you crack it open there's this little feathered chick, you just suck it up and chew the lot down. It is considered ok to leave the hard white deposit in the end of the shell without losing face, it's like hard gristle and tastes like crap but you do get extra points if the chick is fully feathered. You should see the look of disappointment on the vendors face when you actually eat one and go back for seconds. Besides being sold on street stalls, they sell them in large supermarket food courts in Asia. Tasty.

You have the spelling right. It's a ferilised Duck egg that is hard boiled. The locals concider it a delicacy. Inside there is a partially developed embryo (little duck). The smell and taste are uniue and as far as I'm concerned , an aquired taste. It's safe to eat one but most Westerners like me don't paticularry care for them.
Another local delicacy is Dinneyguyan aka chocolate meat. It's pig entrails boiled in seasoned pigs blood. I can't stomach the stuff but the wife and family here love it.
Stick to the lechon baboy (whole roasted pig). Now that IS a delicacy that any westerner can appreciate.

I like to eat only the yellow part. And it's best when it is eaten with salt and vinegar.
They say balut is "pampalakas ng tuhod" (sthrengthens weak knees).

Yes, i've tried it.Several times, actually. Some, mostly foreigners, find it revolting that Filipinos enjoy eating it. Maybe because they didn't know that eating it has benefits, especially before their sexual activities. It really tastes good.
