Some people are obsessed by looks and acceptance with society...
Personally, I prefer personality over looks any day of the week...

I am currently in the middle east, and indeed there are more skin lightening products in the stores than skin darkening/tanning products here.
Many people in this part of the world consider lighter skin more desireable than darker skin. Whereas In the states you would see more people wanting to have that bronze tanned look. (though this has been on the decrease with skin cancer news these days)
It is perhaps one of those things where people want what they donot have. People with light skin seem to want tanned skin, and people with darker skin seem to want lighter skin.... it is just one of those strange culural things...
The ads here are as harsh or harsher than US ads about what is beauty.. One ad has a young reporter starting her job, and the producers complain about her look. several treatments of the skin lightening product being advertised and then she is all the toast of the newsroom.

well it does mater to few people , u shall not always find fair skin people all over india , mostly Bramhins ( konkanstha ) in Maharastra are very fair , tehy are from egypt basically . anyway .. Not all people in India think so they fair skin is good skin , it is not like White skin , may be little tan .. mexian beauty like Salma Hayke is Best Indian skin . ( Just like that )

Well I am Indian and I am also very consious about my skin,if i am to light a look kind of Mexican if i am to dark,well I've never been too dark.

in india,people are having black and brown skin.fair skin is very rare.fair skin attract indian very much,that's why they like american's(fair)

Yes..Indians are very colour conscious..the fairer the better...if one is fair she is treated as beautiful..that is really prevalent all over India...

I think that it might have to do with the avatars. I've seen people asking questions about things in India, and their avatars look white.
