Before TV there was radio. Early radios typically required a set-up (or set) of 3 pieces...an outdoor antenna, the detector (radio) and headphones (there were no speakers back then).

It is simply a carry over from the early days of radio.

for the same reason you wear a pair of pants but its one piece, and a swimsuit that is in 2 pieces (at least for a girl)
