Hi Amy,

The phenomenon of people being self absorbed is neither good or bad.
It depends on what one means by "self absorbed" or how one interprets this term to describe a person.

Scientists, high profile professionals, successful people all have good concentration. As long as a person does not become "self centered", "narrow minded", fanatic (irrespective to his or her creed), antisocial or extremely selfish he or she is ok.

When a person is "self absorbed" may be he is doing something creative to nurture his or her nature without harming fellow human beings.

A "Self absorbed" person who is involved in activities that intentionally hurt or harm others is not a good human being. Then there is something wrong. A psychiatrist or a specialist or a suitable doctor should be consulted early enough to streamline the problem.

As long as a person is a good social being and a responsible citizen of honorable country and is of honorable intensions he or she is ok. For he may be simply getting "self absorbed" to do his professional job which is helpful to the community and the humanity (and is not hurting the humanity and people).

Egocentric, magalomaniac, fanatic, extrimist person is dangerous when he or she is self absorbed.

Because they have no idea that the world is billions of years old, that 6 billion people live on earth, that there are 226 countries, and that their life spans are the equivalent to that of a common fruit fly in the context of world history. They really have a hard time when they finally realize these things, if they ever do, because then they will also find out that they've never had an original thought that hasn't already been thought about by hundreds of millions of people throughout time.

There are people who simply drift along, searching for somewhere they belong to in this world. Looking for a place to call their own, they want to know where they stand in life. Years go by, but the answers might still be unknown to them, even til their very last breath on their deathbeds. Maybe that's what this journey called life is all about.

But living life is never a waste. When we have somebody to love and something to hope for, we learn to embrace the true beauty of life. Cherish every moment of your life because once it's gone, it will never come back. Sometimes you miss it so badly that it hurts inside.

People need to know themselves first before trying to know others. Self absorption is not a bad thing if the result is giving good things to others in a style that is leaned through self absorption. For example, meditation is high level of self absorption but the result is a peaceful person who has good deeds and want to help others
