They actually call us "Island Apes" or "insel affen".
It comes from our island mentality and the fact that Gibralta is a little piece of England stuck on the end of Spain famous for it´s island apes. They just stuck the tag on us for being European but still retaining our idividuality, despite Mr Blairs attempts to turn us into the 51st state of USA.

'Inselaffen' is just a nickname, not meant maliciously, and certainly a lot nicer than the majority of names that the Germans get called by the English. Also, it's not just the Germans using this term. As for us not having a sense of humour: I don't know how you can judge this, unless you are fluent in German and spend some time in Germany. Unless of course, you believe everything you see on TV, which is mainly badly dubbed and stereotypical nonsense. I am married to an Englishman, and trust me, he has a lot to smile about! And if you saw any footage of World Cup 2006, you'll have seen that we do know how to party. Don't remember anything like that going on during Euro 96.
Can I just add in reply to sambob71: RUBBISH! I don't know what Germans you are refering to, but everyone I know likes the Brits. Sorry, you didn't get lucky in Germany, but we German girls are pretty picky (by this I do not mean to offend the British female population!!!)

Whenever German tourists are spotted anywhere in England, the local people all put on monkey suits. It started as a joke but eventually the Germans came to believe that England is populated by monkeys. Fancy a banana?

Its because we live on an island and usually when our young visit Europe our behavior is appalling, vulgar and often rude towards many of the people across Europe like monkeys behaving badly. Thus comes the phrase 'island monkeys' which is a nickname given to us in different variations across Europe because of our bad behavior.

Cos we live on an island and they are part of mainland Europe, the monkeys part was added for "comic" effect, that famous German sense of humour oozing out again.

I think it's just banter; we make fun of them with Nazi Salutes and the like, and they call us names; not much of it is serious on either side. It's all just stereotyping on our part, it isn't really serious, but when you fight a war against people these stereotypes build up, and they've stuck around a bit. I can't really account for the Germans.
That said, there was quite a bit of violence at the World Cup between the thugs of both countries.
Oh, and Celtic Coleen, have you forgotten the Americans? At least most of us (although yes, not all of us, but I bet you have thugs too) have manners.

I can't imagine "island monkeys" being intended as a compliment.
