Mike: Staying because of the children is weak. A miserable marriage will only be worse for the kids.
Maslyn: First smart answer so far.

Staying together for the kids??? Why? The most significant role you play in a child's life is being the primary example for interpersonal relationships!! Stay for the kids - why - so they follow the same patterns and endure the same grief that you do?? Not my kids!!! When there is infidelity there is much more than sex. There is a lack of respect and in most cases abuse. And healthy doses of tension. Even newborns pick up on it and ingrain into their emotional memory banks.
Noooooo way! After catching him in bed with his mistress after 10 years of pure hell I drove home shaking and crying with my 9 month old and 4 year old, changed the locks, then put every scrap of everything that was his including his dirty socks and dirty magazines and dirty dishes into black garbage bags and put them on the front lawn and called his parents to pick it up!
He tried begging and kissing my feet and breaking through the windows, threats of things you wouldn't believe, and everything he could think of to keep control over me but I'D HAD ENOUGH! I told him one night at 4 am when he "needed my help because he didn't know how he was going to get through this" (LOL!) I told him "I CHOOSE SELF RESPECT!" Kids or no kids! I'd had ENOUGH and I know deserve a heck of a lot more than some abusive lying cheating druggie that lied to me and everyone around him for his entire life making us all believe he was the worlds most perfect guy.
I found the best family law lawyer in the state of California and was in his office not 9 days later! And now I have sole custody, the house, everything in it, and half his paycheck. Ain't that grand!
AND THE BEST PART - Being free of him made me available for the LOVE OF MY LIFE! God intervened in my life, there is no doubt about that. Be strong. I'm not religious by any means but God helps you when you hand the problem over to him, that's what I did, and i caught that cheatin bastard not 12 hours later after 6 years of doing it. You might not always get the answer you were expecting but trust in the way he works. That's all!

Yeah. I wanna know this. You NEVER stay for the children. They grow up knowing something was off and confide in their friends "Gee, I wish my parents had split up years ago". I want to know WHY someone would take someone back after falling for someone else. Esp. a long-term extra-marital relationship. BTW, I've never been cheated on. I left my marriage for other reasons. It's not even a case of once a cheater, always a cheater...they may keep cheating on the person they don't love because they don't really love them...they are now still there out of some twisted sense of obligation. THEY FELL FOR SOMEONE ELSE--why does someone want someone who wants someone else?? That's what I don't get. It's a matter of self-respect and demanding respect. Why not just let the cheater and his/her partner just have each other?

I stayed... but called of our wedding. I wouldn't have stayed had I been in a better position... I found out 9 days after our son was born. I was on maternity leave, have no parental support, and my nearest close family member is 85 miles away. So I stayed. I don't know if it's going to work out though; we argue nonstop, seemingly, and I don't trust him at all. I still keep an eye on his email and messenger activity.
Mock me all you want, but it's much easier to say you would leave, take everything he has, etc., if you've never been in the situation.

I thought so too. But then I was cheated on. You don't know what you'll do until something happens to you. People can change, when you have kids the most significant role you play in a child's life. Is being the primary example for interpersonal relationships!!!

I have never been cheated on. I've told my husband that if he cheats and I find out, I won't stay with him, but I'll keep the car AND the house AND he'll pay alimony forever ! He knows I'm serious. You just have to put your foot down about this. Respect yourself !
If someone's dumb enough to stay after they found out their spouse cheated on them, don't insult our intelligence and call it forgiveness.
What a sad, sad life. It WILL happen again. Guaranteed.

if it hasn't happen to you then you don't know. Most people stay and most of the time things work out so for you people that speak without experiencing it may learn the hard way never say never you are not that damn strong and you are not that in control. And why is Brendansmomma so bitter still i think you lost that battle. and it sounds like you have plenty of money and still couldn't win.

Me I stayed because I have nowhere else to go.
Life isn't as black and white as some think....and don't believe for a minute I forgave him or I'm over it because if we were not married didn't have kids I would be out the door so fast his neck would have spun.
If I left my husband his life would be better and mine would be worse so why should I make it easy for him after what he did...he always knows where the door is.

My bf cheated on me after two years of living together. I found out when I got crabs I lived with him for 20 more years, just as friends. He wanted to rekindle the romance, but I could never trust him that way again, but I still loved him as a friend. It is very hard to ever regain the trust that is lost by someone cheating on you. You can end the love relationship, but you don't have to end your friendship.

Old Fart here: Gracie Allen stayed with George Burns when he cheated on her. He did feel guilty about it and bought her a brand new Sterling Silver Tea set, even though he wasn't sure if she knew. Ten years later, Gracie told a friend that she wished George would cheat again because she needed a new Tea set.

Seems like you have plenty of takers for the stupid award. I threw my husband out when I found out. I never took him back. Wouldn't even let it cross my mind. For those who do...they will likely wonder every time someone calls and hangs up, every time their partner is a minute or more late...etc.
I am living proof that parents who stay together through affairs and fighting cause serious problems for their children. If you do anything for kids...teach them consequences for poor decisions and rewards for good decisions.
