avi is a type of format for video files...you might not have the codex downloaded to be able to use the file properly...look for avi codexs online...

AVI stands for Audio Video Interleaved.
The audio and video in the AVI file could be anything... MPEG4, MP3, Ogg Vorbis...
You can't see or hear them because you don't have the right codecs installed.
Download a program called GSpot. GSpot tells you what codecs an AVI needs.

some video cameras are not compatible with some editing programs. Its just that the videos are the wrong type of file. try to find a different movie program online, but be careful and make sure you download it from a trusted website.

avi is usually a divx format you need to download codecs..try nimo codecs do a search for it.
