The oldest urban settlement is a contest between Catal Huyruk in Turkey (this is a "fun" interactive site : http://www.smm.org/catal/ ) and Jericho in Israel ( not so fun site : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jericho ) both are about 10,000 years old, but Jericho claims to be continuously inhabited. Damascus is usually given the title of "oldest continuously inhabited city
