In 1993 I was part of a team sent in to negotiate a cease-fire in war torn Bosnia, all the old people and mothers with small children were trapped in a church which was about to be bomarded, we sent in a team to rescue them and get them to safety, it was outside our area of resposibility and by helping them we were breaking U.N: rules but could we just stand by and watch it happen?
We had our hands full carrying small children and helping old women and the weather didn´t help much. A sight which shocked me was an old man with half his leg shot away black with gangrene hobbling towards us on a makeshift crutch and because my hands were full I had to watch him struggle on his own.
We got them all to safety and when we delivered them to be reunited with families in another town, the local authorities there wanted bribes of various sorts(if you know what I mean) before they would let them pass safely through, when we refused and a local Militiaman pulled a gun on me The look on my face made him freeze in his tracks. Those people were under MY protection, and when one of hiss buddies came flying A.R.S.E over T.I.T out the back of my truck where he´d been trying to get money and valuables from the people we´d just rescued, I realised he´d just met my friend who was in the back helping a young mother with a sick child. That was my first smile of the day.
nobody could see the tears in my eyes though as a young mother smiled at me for helping her get safely away with her very young baby.
As for the old man with the gangrene, he almost hopped off the truck and danced with joy at being saved.
The sights were shocking but heart-warming at the same time, and that night I fell asleep with a satisfied smile.
Next day everybody told me they saw me on TV, I never did but that´s not what we were there for.

When I was back in Mi. I was a witness to Southwest airlines Flight 255. It was an icy cold evening, and the plane crashed into the I94 overpass. It exploded on impact. There was only 2 survivors a 68 yo man,and a baby girl. I was asked to help direct traffic while the Emergency Teams tried to get the living to the UofM burn center. I still remember watching people scavenging through
dead bodies(some still burning) to get whatever valuables they could find. I've only just begun to deal with those images.

I watched a work colleague fall 30 feet to his death in a nightclub in Cardiff at a Christmas party. His head split like a melon upon impact and he died in a huge pool of blood in front of me and all his work colleagues.
The party sort of broke up after that, although the police kept everyone in the club for a further 4 hours asking questions.

When I was a child, my friend and I were riding our bikes. He shot out of a side road into the path of an oncoming car. He was thrown high into the air and landed on his head. No helmets in those days...
