You can join survey companies for free.
Their business model made it such that they can be profitable and yet still able to payout some rewards to their subscribers.
The thing is that the subscribers would be earning quite a small sum unless the person is a registrant under many such companies that sends surveys and such.
Another thing you could do is to start a content-rich website or blogs and add some Google Adsense or relevant advertisements to the site. Please don't do it for the sake of the money as this motive can easily stumble someone at the starting point.
Well, it is a skill to master for the latter method. I suggest trying out writing a blog for free first, learn the trends of how people get into your website and what kind of posts they like to read and such. Go to http://www.wordpress.com and get a free blog there. They do not allow any form of advertisements there. They do provide useful scripts like blog stats (the statistics which shows the trends and top posts of the blog) and some other cool things which you can try out while you are in it.
Build up your experience there first and when you are ready, go purchase your own domain and host their free blog system on your site. This is when you can place advertisements and such.
Eventually, what you need to invest on would be your time and effort.

Simple.. sell a service that you can do for others that they can't do for themselves. Make your appointments over the net and then do it.
Nothing is for free old bean - it does take a bit of effort.

try starting a business online. like the one yahoo is offering or try eBay and sell your old goods... hope this helps :)
