That would depend largely on your pupose and financial abilities. Common practical approaches such as integrated wind/fuel or wind/solar/fuel systems are too expensive for home use for now -- unless you really want them or you don't have a choice (such as when you live on an island).
The use of solar power for heating, however, is now often regarded as economically feasible.

Either that, or build a house on a river and install a paddle-wheel generator.
If it were cheap to do it yourself, giant electric utilities wouldn't exist.

You need to have property to put the system on. You cant carry it around . Rural electricity is cheap in some states. To make your own is what African villages are doing with the new technologies.

wind turbines are efficient, practical, and even profitable.
startup costs are a bit high if buying the setup...but still offer a better ROI (less costly) and are more reliable than solar panels.
