'The Da vincicode' and 'the alchemist' are works of fiction. Read the 'Ramayana' and 'Mahabharta' - the two mythological epics from India. You will be engrossed by their sheer magnificence.

In Non-fiction this one book by Dale Carnegie - "How to stop worrying and start living" is my all time favorite. I stopped counting long ago how much times I have read this book. Every time I read this book, it teaches me something new. Highly recommended and far-far better than the kind of self-help stuff coming these days.

Apart from the above, most books of Osho are also worth reading. They will widen your thinking horizon to a great level.

I like the Bible(It's filled with adventure, poems, drama, comedy, science, math, mystery, wisdom, murder, life, and most importantly the Bible is the Word of God, Himself). I suggest you also try reading The Purpose Driven Life Book by Rick Warren. It really helped me understand why I am here on earth.

1984 by orwell. and, yes, it's so good it's scary.

edited to add: the alchemist is too childish and the da vinci code is really a crappy book.
