I just went to Amsterdam in March and everyone there speaks English, but the national language is Dutch. I got a great deal on North West Airlines through Orbitz or Expedia. We actually flew on KLM which is a dutch airlines, but the flight was arranged through NWA. Below is a link to the website where I learned a lot, frequently used dutch phrases, live webcam, weather, transportation, etc. We had the best time of our lives, seriously. You will have a great time.

I love Amsterdam, it's beautiful with their century-old buildings and canals connecting the entire city. The Dutch people are nice with a live-and-let-live attitude and almost everyone speaks 4 or 5 languages, mainly Dutch, English, French and German. You can rent a bike to get around or take the local trams. Driving is difficult since there are very few parking spaces available. By the way, in case you're wondering, the car steering wheel is on the left side unlike the Great Britain and Ireland. There are little restaurants all over the place but the service is not as fast as in the U.S., also they serve coffee in tiny little cups. It's very, very crowded during the tourist season which is pretty much 8 months out of a year. Also, it's a very safe city, I see young people out at 3 or 4 in the morning on weekends. As for the red light district, unless you're interested in that sort of business, it's a non-issue, just avoid that part of the city.

In Amsterdam they speak Dutch because it's the capital of Holland, but they also understand the English language very well. There are direct flights with KLM, but it probably is cheaper to fly with several transfers via Singapore or Bangkok and London with British Airways and Qantas. A good website for tourists is www.vvvamsterdam.nl or www.iamsterdam.com. Enjoy Amsterdam, it is a great place to be!!!

Dutch, which I speak barely any of (just listened to a CD on the plane.) Most people were multi-lingual, and nearly everyone spoke English also.

Amsterdam is in Holland. If you live in America, try KLM or Continental airlines.

Dutch is the official language and everyone also speaks English and usually at least one other language also. KLM is the official airlinr and it is a GREAT airline too. But any airline will go with a connection somewhere.
