You can change your name in any state. All you need to do is contact the Social Security office and fill out the form. That's it.

You can always use an alias as long as you are not filling out a government form. But there is no law stopping you from using an alias.

You have to get a court order to have it changed on your birth certificate in order to get id/credit cards/etc in your new name.
