I've heard that H.P. Lovecraft has verry good horror books. As I did not enjoy too much Steven King (well, except for The Eyes of the Dragon), and Dean Koontz just a trifle more, and haven't dared Lovecraft yet, my info is second-hand.
A totally different author is Anne Rice, but her books can be of interest too.
