Silver is a very dirty metal. When its in your body for a long time it oxidizes and you may notice a green build up on it. NO piercing shops should pierce with silver for a starter bars. Especially for oral piercings.
You may have a nickle sensitivity, but it depends on how sensitive you are to it. They don't piercer you with silver, they pierce you with Surgical Stainless Steel. This is a metal, implant grade material that has a very low amount of nickle in it ( about 7% which is low) and most people with a nickle sensitivity do not react to it. I have a mild nickle sensitivity and do not react to it.
If you have an extreme nickle sensitivity, you can request the piercing shop to order you in a Titanium starter barbell. Titanium is a pure metal with no nickle in it. It may cost you a bit more, but at least you wont have a reaction to it. Titanium comes in different colours too.
You can get a gold tongue barbell , but dont rush in right away.....
When you first get pierced your barbell is going to be approx 3/4 long. (to allow for lots of swelling.) Then after 2 weeks the swelling will go down and you will be able to put a smaller barbell in that is more comfortable. A smaller length will prevent you from chipping your teeth, talking funny and biting on the barbell.
Its really important that you change your starter bar after the first 2 weeks unless its still swollen unless you have a thick tongue to begin with.
So to prevent you from buying 2 gold barbells. I would suggest getting the starter titanium one at the 3/4 size because its cheaper than gold, then when your all healed up go back and see what size you need. Then order the Gold. I hope that made sence.
**Also......You cant get pierced right away with plastic, acrylic , or nylon (ptfe) barbells, because they can't sterlize it properly in the shop autoclave, it would melt. But you can wear plastic barbells afterwards.
Good luck!♥

I doubt you'd have a problem because most body jewelery is surgical steel, not silver. But they do make gold body jewelery too; my wife has her tongue, belly, ears, and some other parts (heh heh) pierced with gold.

I think that most of the studs used for tongues are surgical steel.
I'm very jewelry sensitive but that never posed a problem with my tongue piercing.

The sensitivity in your ears is different to how sensitive your tongue is, though tongues are usually much more sensitive to ears. So i would suggest that you buy a gold tongue stud.

Get stainless steel, maybe try it in your ears first though. I have a friend who's very allergic to metal, and she's fine with titanium jewlerry, maybe try that.

If it's the color you don't like, they have gold-plated earrings that are silver-colored.
