indeed a good question... but surely it's more to do with the fact that in this life, with something as unmeasurable and intangable as a soul.... that really the question is more to do with the 'perception' of soul... which indeed, is in that grey blobby mess in our head.
For if the premise is true about the soul, it can exist independently of the body (once the body has died) but it's a difficult argument to qualify. Can the same be said of the Brain? Can it exist without the perception of soul?
The truth is, we have not the ways or means of proving or disproving either.

You couldn't be more wrong.
That blobby mess is completely innactive without the presence of a certain form of energy. Scientists can't make much sense of it without quntum physics and even that's messy. Some religious or spiritualists might call it soul, chi, chakra, etc.
But basically you've got it backwards.
Physical reality depends on energy to exist... Thinking is a form of energy, not an entity.
If you want me to prove it beyond the shadow of any doubt just let me know and I'll get started on the book.
No Joke!

Sure, brain CAUSES consciousness, there is no denying that, as without brain , as you have noticed, there is no consciousness.
However it is a jump unsupported by evidence to say that brain IS consciousness.
This would be the same as to say that an apple is an apple-tree.
Sure without an apple-tree an apple would not exist, yet you do not conclude that apple IS an apple-tree.
Now just image brain as an apple-tree bearing the fruit of consciousness, clearly, now, brain and consciousness cannot be the same thing.

Surely??
If I ask you to point to yourself right now...
go on do, you and all the other answerers...
JUst point to yourself....
You will notice the 95% of people will point ot their heart or solar plexus. That is where we think we really exist.
Also the presupposition that the we are made of components doesn;t make sense to me IMHO. We are an organism, no mind body connection going on at all, we just are.
You might consider me to be an "empty instrument" for spouting my opinion but hey, it makes the world interesting!
Keep smiling!

Yes.Soul is you.Man is a soul having a body.Soul everlasting while body is temporary. If you have understood you have been liberated from all worries. But where soul is situated id debatable,Some argue it is in the top of head, while some argue it is in form of a small light in the heart. When heart beat ceases man is dead it is most probaly seated in the heart.

You can not see the soul or consciousness and hence the grey thing in the head can not be either of them.

That blobby mess is still there when you die, so the question is, what is that spark that makes the difference between that blob being active and inactive?

The brain is like a battery and the soul is your charge, some people are AA some are PP3, we all have a finite shelf life.

Surely it is... And to the answers above mine, the brain needs electrical stimulation or needs the energy to generate it in order for it to function properly... When you're dead, there's no electrical impulse between neurons, so the brain is dysfunctional, and therfore you are not conscious...
