Why do people often refer to Australia as "Oz"? That's always confused me..

Because the way be pronounce 'Australia', the 's' isn't really that strong. So 'Oz' is just a shortened version of 'Australia'. Our nickname for our country, that's mostly used by a younger generation and people who've travelled. The same as how Americans might say 'The States' or USA.
Also, we spell just fine thankyou :)

Cz we mad wordsmiths and Oz is the country where Ozziez live. I think it came from an American cz if an American with a strong accent says Aussie (short for Australian) it sounds like Ozzie.

It is because most Australians find it difficult to pronounce words with more than two syllables, so they shortened the name.

PS They can't spell either ;)
