Blacks started making up names as a result of black power politics of the 1970's. The use of popular "caucasian" names is symbolic of Black enslavement and oppression at the hands of whites. By inventing new names, Blacks were enaging in self-empowerment.

some of us just like unique names, others it is cultural like Aiisha & Shanique are African names. Sometimes it can be a combination of a family name . It's not any different than any other culture or nationality having their own spelling or pronunciation.

I was reading the other answers and just laughing. Most of the people who answered this question are white anyway. Not everyone names their child a name for the same reason y'know. A jewish person may name their child david because of the king, or because a relative who died's name was david, a christian may name a child david because of david from the bible, or someone may name their child david because they just like the name. Presuming to know why an entire race names their child something is racist in itself. But anyway, the reason why I think that some black people name their children names that are unusual (to white people) is because we don't want to be like you guys. For centuries black people always had to conform to whites in the way they dress, talk, name their children, and in their hairdo's and now we just want to be different. That's one reason. My neice's name is Kiandra, a name that some people may consider "ghetto" but the reason that she was named that is because its a mix between her parent's names Kimberly and Andrew. So don't judge people and assume things about them based on their names because first of all no one actually picks their name, and secondly you dont know the history around it. And most importantly, to ASSUME makes an *** out of U and ME.

They're only unique to you because your of a different culture, if my woman named my kid "Dick," or "paul" I'd wonder why. Get some black friends, and a kid named Demetrius being called Tre might not be so strange. They're not unique, they're just different from what you are accustomed to.
In addition, Brad, Africa, so far scientifically, IS the mother land! Check your history.

This question reflects your one-track mindset & perceptivity. Which is unique to you is normal to them & vice versa. Don't you think some "nordic" names are very unusual & unique ? Try to be ashtonished in some other way.

Its just a creativeness and originality, its not confined to Black people. It is a way of creating original ethnic culture from a perspective of having a previous culture completely destroyed, couple with a desire to remain distinct. Indigenous people in my country do it also.

first off, i believe names have meanings to them, and you should choose your childrens names wisely, know the meaning, it ahould have some significant meaning..otherwise.whats in a name?..names like Aicha, khadijah, imani, layla...most of the names they choose are 90 percent arabic, or muslim names, some know the meanings others just like the way they sound. its too bad most people are ignorant to this. the most beautiful names are the ones people know nothing about.
