Cable - uses fiber optic cables connected to your home, may not be available in your area depending on who the provider is.
DSL - although a broadband service, uses your phone line to deliver the internet.

Cable modem is for the co-axial cable (same as your cable tv) and DSL is for telephone line. Most of the cable operators provide TV and Internet through same cable. The one cable that connects to your house is splitted to two with a splitter, one branch goes to your TV and the other goes to your cable modem. Sometimes they may pull a seperate cable for internet, that means two cable lines will be connected to your home. Theoritically cable is more faster, but not consistent always. This is most popular now.
For DSL, it uses a telephone line. It may be sharing your existing telephone line or a seperate (dedicated) telephone line will be used. The telephone line is connected to tyour DSL modem.
From cable/DSL modem a network cable is connected to your PC/router.

The source for the connection. Cable modems use a cable (coaxial cable) input and the dsl modems use a dsl (telephone line) input.
