Since you don't deal lots with graphics, then Visual Basic will suit your needs.

If it's purely text based, I'd go with C++ since you'll be storing and dealing with a lot of numbers.

If you are serious, and I have written several, basic is the easiest ( the old "T" basic by Tandy is much better than the Dartmouth version do to the "print at" function as well as others.) for starters and then turbo pascal (do to the use of macros) as you progress.
