Why do people treat them so kindly? They did nothing to deserve that treatment. And then they have the Special Olympics. It's like they all have some free pass in life to act like idiots.

Wow. You are an incredibly shallow and hateful person.

Perhaps they are treated "special" by some to make up for the insults hurled at them by others....name calling, staring, mimicing..etc.

Perhaps they are treated "special" by some people because they have had to overcome many obstacles in order to do things many people take for granted.

Perhaps they are treated "special" by some people because of their courage and the unconditional love they show to the people they care about.

My son has Down syndrome. He is special because he's my child and the light of my life. The extra chromosome he was born with means that he will always have to work just a little harder than other children to master certain things. He is special because he survived open heart surgery at 2 months of age. He smiles and laughs freely, but he can also have temper tantrums...just like any child. He is special because he will have to learn to be strong to endure the taunts and insensitivity of people like you.

He is NOT an idiot, nor does he act that way. Every parent I know of a child with DS does not give "free passes". Our children are expected to behave. They are disciplined like any other child should be, with love, compassion and consistency.

And why on earth would you be offended about the Special Olympics? For a start, it is not exclusive to Down syndrome, it is open to people with a variety of disabilities. I'm sure you've never been to a SO event, otherwise your cold, hateful heart might just have been touched ever so slightly by the spirit of accomplishment, fair play and good sportsmanship.

Your complete lack of knowledge on the subject of Down syndrome, and your general insensitivity makes you look foolish. You should educate yourself before making such ridiculous statements. You should also work on your character, because it is severly lacking.

How could you possibly think it's OK to ask a question that shows your total ignorance? People with Downs do not act like idiots any more than you or I do. And "special" is a hated word among a great number of people with all kinds of disabilities (including Downs syndrome). Yes, many of them have some degree of mental limitations, but that isn't something they can do anything about, because it's part of the syndrome! Your comments make it sound like their behavior is intentional just to get attention. And a lot of the time, this "special" treatment is really the product of condescension and antiquated attitudes about disabilities and the people who have them, so it's NOT "kindly" at all.

Do you think they are "acting"???

If they arent special, and not treated kindly, what then would you have be done to them ? Any "halfway" alternatives? Are you "afflicted" with downs as well ?
You sure are "acting" that way! Sorry, was I being insensitive? I thought you wouldnt mind. I think they are more "sensitive" than you are, but thats a generalization. Something like what you are doing. Dont you realize that by treating people in a special way, that gives "normal" people something back as well? And not all Down syndrome people get treated kindly, just as not every down syndrome person is a nice person as well.

Oh, I better shut up. You probably cant digest all that. Byeeee.

I have a son with Downs I don’t know how to put it other then he puts s a smile on everybody’s face from that grumpy old man across the store to the angry driver that was flipping you off a minute ago. To do that alone is special in my book. There is enough hate in this world. I knew nothing of downs before I became a father of one. I would never change a thing. It sounds like your question you maybe a bit jealous? I can print you up a pass to be an idiot if you like but my 7 year old acts much more rational then a lot of people I have seen with out downs.

I have a cousin that has downs... I have to say, he is the happiest person that I know! Ever notice that most of them are smiling all the time? 24 y/o and still has his birthday party @ Chuck E. Cheese... Who wouldn't be happy?

16 hr latter..... I want to say that the only person that I know w/ downs synd. is special! I was 11 when he was born, and I watched him excell faster than some the kids his age.... Then It all stoped around 4 y/o The only thing that kept maturing was his body... The sad thing was at such a young age, He understood that everyone was leaving him behind... When he was 6 y/o, I was 17... He was my little buddy! Now I have a little buddy that can body slam a grown man... :-) He also has a pretty cool job, He works for one of the Clear Channel radio stations.

Because they are special. The only unconditional love I have ever received from human beings has been from people with Down's syndrome. They are treated kindly because, in my experience, they are kind. If they are somewhat deficient in IQ, that's better than being without human compassion, corndog. Have a great day.

Just because a person is a little different is not a reason to not treat them with respect and dignity.
They 'act like idiots' because most Downs people are intellectually disabled. Revoking their 'free pass' (what a *compassionate* person would call abusing them) will not make them smarter, just crush their spirits, making them far less likely to contribute meaningfully to society.

Why do people with downs syndrome get treated like they're so 'special'?

because they are special. They love everyone and everyone loves them.
*how many people do you know that loves everyone?
