Just laying quietly gives you about 80% of the rest sleeping does.
Do what works for you but I find by reminding myself that just laying there is pretty effective, I usually quite worrying about not sleeping and go to sleep.
Daily exercise (even a little) and not eating for two hours before bed can make a big difference, too.
Good Luck!

Try NOT to sleep - no kidding! Make yourself comfortable in your bed - read a book, you think you'll enjoy, watch TV - do anything you like - but tell yourself you've got the whole night to spend with a book/film you like. Drink something you like (except for alcohol), eat a bit, only a bit. Tell yourself you'll enjoy the time while you're awake. This takes a bit of time but after a few nights you'll see that it works. It'll make you stop thinking about having to sleep which usually is the major problem and only produces a spiral of thoughts. Tell yourself you'll stay awake!

Improving sleep by having healthful habits is a good place to start. Eat properly, get at least 20 minutes of exercise daily, has been proven to improve sleep patterns. If this does not work for your, consult your Primary Care Physician and ask about trying some of the new sleep drugs that are on th market, such as Ambien, or Lunesta. He may want to do a physical exam to make sure there's nothing else going on, and may prescribe these medications for a short term, to help you re-set your sleeping pattern.

If you can't get to sleep after about a half hour, its usually best to get up, have a drink of warm milk and a tylenol, and read for a while until you are tired enough to sleep.

I suggest you read until sleep hits you especially those Physiology (medical) books that's very technical. It works for me. (",)

I prefer reading over having the television on, stimulating your brain with a good book is something that will bring dreams into your mind.
Dreaming is healthy.
