Your chances are decreased, but not to nothing. Each woman is different, some have no chance, some have no problem getting pregnant, even if they don't mean to.

Is not entirely true, there is always a chance to get pregnant during lactation. The reason is that even though the ovulation is inhibited in some women during that period, the duration is unpredictable, therefore possible to get pregnant if not using a contraceptive method.
The best example of this fact is that women after their delivery through C-section - operation - must take a mini pill to prevent a pregnancy as soon as they live the hospital. It would be very dangerous to run the risk of getting pregnant during the lactation period having a recent wound in the uterus.
In the past women where trying to extend their lactation to prevent unwanted pregnancies, it did not always work....but nowadays it is absolutely unnecessary to take the risk having efficient oral contraceptives or barrier methods - example condoms-

Yes, I had two children under 1 and three before my eldest was 2. I fell 3 weeks after having one, and almost the same thing again after my second then only went a year before having my 4th
You're lactating for one child but the rest of the body will function as normal, tell her to be careful because it's damn hard work having so many at such a close age, lol

Yes, there is a definite possibility for getting pregnant. But you friend is also correct. When you are breast feeding a baby, the body knows that you already have a baby to take care of. So the body does not really co-operate to get pregnant again. Still, there is a fair chance of it. It is always adviced to have atleast 2 years gap between consecutive babies.

Lactation is not dependent on ovulation and visa versa. A woman can get pregnant if she has started her mentrual cycle after having a baby!
