Hi,

The first thing we need to do is define a few things first:
There is only three legitimate ways to make money doing medical billing:

1) Be employed as a medical biller by a solo practitioner- group practice-hospital-clinic, etc.

2) Own your own medical billing business (Home based or Brick-and-mortar) or

3) Medical billing consulting business (Home based, Brick-and-mortar, In Office or at patient’s home)

When you say In House Medical Biller the term is used to describe case#1. It has nothing to do with being at home and earning money for doing a job. The only exception to that rule is when someone has worked in let’s say a hospital doing the job of medical billing and the hospital has a telecommuter program that allows people that have proven themselves to know their job well to hook up to their network from home and complete their daily workload. Everything is provided by the employer and you get paid to do the job.

The questions you are asking however describe case #2. There is no employer because you are the Owner of the business and the success or failure of the business lies squarely on your shoulders. If you can’t sell or don’t like to sell your services to potential clients then this is not the business for you.

So allow me to answer your specific questions:

How long it take's to learn?

That depends on the individual and the course/school that’s giving it. If done online it takes most people a few weeks to a few months to complete (it’s usually done at your pace or it should be that way). If done in a traditional learning institution then they set the pace and if done in a trade school/vocational school it will take between two-six months. Before you go looking for courses online you should read the following website:

If I can really do this from home?

Sure you can! I’ve been doing it for almost ten years now and it’s the best move I ever made. I also hear several success stories every month from those that have just started and recently signed their first client or expanded their client base.
Please remember that this is not a job, you are not an employee, you are the owner of the business and your survival as a business depends on you/what you do.

Should I practice my typing?

If this were Medical Transcription I would say Yes but even if you henpeck at the keys you will still be able to do the job of being a medical biller. Heck I still don’t type as well as I should but after doing it for years I have gotten a lot faster and more accurate than when I first started out.

Everyone should practice on their typing skills because if you are fast and accurate you can land a job just about anywhere in the USA with very little thought.

How eazy is it to get started?

It’s not as easy as some would have you believe and that’s a fact. Most of the things we see and hear about this home based business are untruths molded to sell something else (medical billing software, services, subscriptions, etc.) by those that are trying to sell them so please be aware.

If you know nothing about the industry as a home based business then the first thing you should do is read the ebook by Paul Hackett entitled “Medical Billing Book For Beginners” http://medicalbillingboook.tripod.com

If you do then you will know exactly what you are getting into, what you should expect from the industry and what your clients will expect from you before you invest anything trying to pursue the business.

And the fact that this has been in head for so long, dose that mean this is what I should be doing?

Don’t let your head or your heart battle over this. Make your decision based on facts and that’s why I mentioned the book above. I am sure that once you read it you will know in your heart if doing medical billing from home is the right business/career for you to take on.

Do you need math to do this?
]
You have to know math for any business that you decide to undertake or else you won’t be able to correctly negotiate the pricing for each client, do the books, bill your customers and in some cases the patient. I’m not saying you have to be a wiz at it but you do need basic math skills to run the business professionally.

How much is the class to take?

That depends on where and how you take the course. If it’s in a vocational school/trade school the cost shouldn’t be that bad because that’s all they are teaching you. If you do it in a traditional learning institution (college) then it will cost entirely too much because they will make you take and pay for courses outside of that major to get your certificate.

Like I said above, read the following website and see what you should be looking for in an online medical billing course. Here’s the website again:

http://medicalbillingbook.tripod.com/medical_billing_courses

Another school can be found at the following website. I saw the owner of the site above mention this school in response to a different topic but he also praised their medical billing program. It costs more money than the one mentioned above but you also get a lot more support (alumni, job placement) once you have complete the course. Oh the course is also longer but you can complete it in your own time because it’s online:

http://www.tinyurl.com/2347z
(Click on the medical billing link/tab on the left hand side of the page. You will see they have several different types of courses depending on the level of expertise in medical billing that you are striving to reach.)

Is there anything more that is needed for type of job?

Sure there is but no one has enough time to sit down and break it all down for you and those that have the time will charge you an-arm-and-a-leg to do so. The best thing I can suggest is reading the book that I mentioned above because every situation is dicussed in full and if you have any further questions you can email the author directly and he will clarify if needed (That’s part of the customer service you receive for purchasing the book and costs nothing extra.)

Good luck to you.

If you're looking for a home-based business that can help you pull in $20,000 to $45,000 a year using your computer, a work-at-home opportunity doing medical billing may sound like the perfect choice. But before you part with your money, consider this: The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has brought charges against promoters of medical billing opportunities for misrepresenting the earnings potential of their businesses and for failing to provide key pre-investment information required by law.

You need to start trying to make something of yourself. I didn't finish high school either but I went back to college when the kids got grown. Some people have it and some don't but don't give up on the idea. Maybe you were meant to do medical billing. When you can't forget a thought it's intended to be for sure!
