Google led the pack a short time ago, but lately their results pages are being crowded by the search-for-pay link pages that pose as websites...They get away with it because the pages are crowded with keywords, and they're very annoying.

Personally, I still like the Ask.com approach wherein an "assistant" (volunteer editor) helps you to locate relevant results for new searches that haven't been archived yet.
Yahoo was the first major player, and will always be in my Top 3 when doing research...but which engine I choose first depends on what I'm searching for....Also, the meta-search engines are far more complete, as a first-run research test.
Metas will query multiple engines at the same time, for a wider set of results.

Google is thought to be the best because it gets so much traffic. However, that's what makes it so slow. All that traffic is clogging up the series of tubes that leads to Google. I would recommend you use a lesser known search engine like grokwiki.com.

Google is a better engine in terms of a short query, if you have a long sentence, such as a qoute you can't find on google... yahoo will probably find it. Google spiders are more efficient than yahoo slurp in my opinion...

For images I seem to have more luck with asltavista.com than both google and yahoo...
