Mice will vary a lot in temperament so I would suggest spending some time with the mice in the store before choosing one. Take one that is willing to take a piece of food out of your hand after climbing on it. I have had many mice over the years and the occasional mouse is always terrified of being handled and will hide even when all the other mice are hanging off the bars begging for treats when I call to them. A lot of pet stores have inbred mice so make sure there are no tiny bumps (tumors) under its skin, and females do not smell as much as males but if there are no outgoing females you are better off with a male.

I used to breed mice. I bought my first from a pet store and she was very tame. After she gave birth to her first litter she let me hold them when they were 10 minutes old. You should spend time with your mouse. They begin to wait for you to hold them and feed them

They can be very nice. He/she may be scared at first, so just let them get used to you slowly. You may want to do a Google seach and find some caresheets. Mice can be very tame if you are willing to put the time in to let them get used to you.
