I went to Subway yesterday with my mom.One of the servers was very nice, but I couldn't tell if this was a man or woman! We were let off easy the first time; we didn't have to say anything. But we go to Subway a lot, and we are eventually going to have to speak to this person. How do we find out if we should say Mrs. or Mr. without directly asking him/her?

Well, ask them their name, or look for their name tag.

The telltale sign is the adams apple.
I'm sure someone has beaten me to the punch on this one, but that is pretty much the deal breaker.
However, there are some men who are very slender and naturally built like a woman, so even then, you may not be able to tell.

Pretty much, you can tell by the size of the hands and/or the adams apple.

Some men may be on hormones already, so they may not even sound like a man anymore.

I've seen some very convincing ones, let me tell you.

Does it matter, though?
You could always ask his/her name.
Even if it is a man who is trying to be a woman, he may give you a woman's name...so, there you go!
From that point on, you can call her by HER name.
Or his name.
Or whatever is the case.
You get the point.

Don't use either. Just say. I would like a 6 inch. Then pay for it and go home.

IT'S PAT!

Look at the name tag or ask a question that by nature they would have to give up their gender... so what did you do for your high school prom!?

be neutral! Say things like thank you, but not mam or sir maybe you can tell by the voice or name tag or how other interact with them!

Just don't say anything or talk much. Just go thanks....
That's what I do when it happens to me and I understand you I like to know what sex people are so I know how to address them.
☺

just say "excuse me...."

or "I'd like an extra long sub...."

no need to say
Ms or Mr

there is a he/she at my bank and I never once said "mr/ms"
I just go there and do my business and be on my way...

just say yes please, or no thanks. or if you do NEED to say their gender, then take a guess. if you are wrong, the worst youll have is a little embarrasment. Im sure the person gets it a lot and would be happy to set you straight.

don't say either one, leave your conversation with no gender specifics. Your just ordering a sandwich you don't really need to address them either way.
