I'm interested in learning some programming beyond HTML and CSS, and I'm wondering where to start. I'm intrigued by Ruby On Rails, but maybe I should start with JavaScript. Or PHP, MySQL, Python... or maybe those are all a little apples and oranges... What do you suggest?

go for PHP/MySQL or ASP/MSSQL. the first one is best because it is still in the race and all items related to it are opensource.

Try to learn PHP , it's very easy and powerfull.

I think you're little bit confused, javascript is a client-side language, and using javascript there is not much to do, you can't store some data in a database using javascript. Sure you will need it to learn, but you can skip it for now and begin with PHP. Or you can learn javascript first (it's very easy) , and then PHP. But remember, their purposes are different !!

Good luck

eventhough your into PHP, javascript and so on... you still connected to some HTML codes so better start to basic. I suggest ASP than javascript, why? ASP is combination of HTML javascript and vbscript, you'll all learn them all in one apple. try this site... nice guide i say... www.w3schools.com, javascript , HTML, PHP, ASP and more
