okay here goes. i have a really good friend [i would call her my best friend] but the problem is, i don't know if i should call her my BEST friend because she probably wouldn't call me HER best friend. I don't want to flat out ask her "hey, can we be best friends?" cuz i mean, come on, how socially desperate do you gotta be dude? any advice is welcome!!

If you feel she's your 'best' friend, it shouldn't matter whether she says you are or not. Maybe she's thinking the same thing you are and is afraid to say it first. Give it a try, you never know ;-)

This is the sort of situation that seems really childish, but isn't. The reality is that our friends are incredibly important - they effectively define us. I understand your dilemma.

The best bet, I believe, is just to say it like it is - if she's your best friend then she is just that. If a critical condition for you of having a best friend is that they must also be yours then you will have to consider your relationship if she doesn't reciprocate this statement. I would, though be wary of saying that just because she doesn't say it means you shouldn't consider her your best friend - if you believe she is your most important friend despite your current uncertainty as to how she'll act then presumably the relationship is already pretty good.

Best friends, to start with, sound like a childish label. In reality they are critical - a best friend is someone you can always rely at any time. The trick of a best friend is that you have to always be reliable to them as well - it's a two way thing, and if you think this is something you're happy with them just tell her and give her one of the most precious things you can have.

you can ask her: who's your best friend? or something like this. so it won't sound like you think she is your best friend and you get to know if you are her best friend. "best friend" is just a label, but it depends on how much fun you have with your friend, regardless of best friend or second best friend.
