Did anyone else think that the story itself had a somewhat Emo quality to it? Because I did, it totally reminded me of a Panic! At the Diso or the Used or My Chemical Romance song.

...I wouldn't say the book is emo. Maybe emo bands have read the book and based some of their work on it.

The thought never struck me! But this IS an interesting question. At certain times in your live the music you love to listen to and the books you love to read in a way intertwine. For instance, I can't listen to Soft Cell's version of Tainted Love without thinking of William S. Burrough's Wild Boys. Atmosphere!
I really enjoyed reading Nabokov's Lolita (that by no means is a teen drama but a profound and demanding study of human drama written by one of the world's best authors ever) and I have a certain liabilty to Emo, though it is not my favourite music genre. For me Lolita is more like Jaques Brel, Serge Gainsbourgh (especially Ford Mustang), The Divine Comedy, or Pulp (Hardcore).
But you have a point there, Emo and Lolita, maybe, share an air of Weltschmerz (world weariness) and I'm sure a lot of Emo musicians have read their Nabokov and Sartre, etc. But this rather means identifying with Humbert (and Nabokov is giving you a hard time when it comes to identifying with his characters!)
and not with Lolita!

I have read the book Lolita--and I have to ask if you have read it and identified yourself with Lolita? Do you have a secret fantasy to turn an older guy on and let him lust after you just a little? Is there a thrill in it for you or do you want to see just how far you can go without getting caught? The main character does get caught and in the end she doesnt care--and he gets shot.
The story is not sad--but pathetic. Book and movie both were a waste of my time. Read: Sons and Lovers---now theres a book.

I agree with you, I think those kinds of teen drama books are for lazy people who don't want to think to read. I see them as the soap operas of literature.. They take no intellect to understand, and most of the time there just about some girl complaining about all the problems she doesn't have.
