While someone is alive they can continue to produce art. Once they are dead, there is a limited amount of their work that is available in the world. Scaricity whether you like it or not, creates the monetary rise of the worth of their existing art. Mozart and Beethoven enjoyed a certain amount of fame and noteriety while they were alive. When someone's work brings in a high price, they become more famous among collectors since the scarcity of the work makes them sought after for collections.

It's often difficult to reflect on someone's life until he/she has passed. People have a pretty good idea who will be famous while they are alive. But more often than not, people will wait to make sure this guy/girl won't goof on his/her career before they give them the rank of immortality. For example, Michael Jackson, Barry Bonds. People have to see how they live the rest of their lives before they applaud.

Many people who we consider great today, in their time were controversial, and little-known. The value of a creation goes up once the creator dies, because there can never be another one exactly like it.

It is also because they will never paint, sing, dance, etc again. So what they have left behind is all we have left.
