The most important thing is to promote your biz where your customers are. So, post flyers in local veterinarians' offices, near dog parks, or at pet stores. (Many pet stores and vet offices have free space for pet service-related ads...) If you already have a pet, ask your vet if you can put flyers or coupons in their waiting room.
When you are out working (patrolling?) wear a t-shirt with your company name on it. (You can get these made at mall kiosks or other businesses that do short-run t-shirt printing.)
If your local area allows it, drop flyers off at peoples' houses in your area. Don't annoy folks with this, though... some people will be turned off by it.
Finally, walk around your neighborhood and talk to people walking their dogs. Give them a flyer or business card if you have one. Maybe you can offer a special -- the first clean-up is free, for instance -- to get them to give you a try-out.

A few ideas:
1) Flyers & Business Cards - Who are your customers & where do they shop (e.g. grocery, home improvement stores, etc)? Post flyers where your customers frequent.
2) Advertise Locally -- Newspapers, Craigslist, Yahoo! Local
3) Word of Mouth -- Offer a great service & people will talk.
4) Mailers -- Send out coupons, specials, etc.
Associations may be a good avenue to explore as well. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.
Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

how did you get into a business like that - did someone say I think you ought to pick up poop for a living. How are you qualified - do they offer college courses in backyard poop management? I have NO idea on how you would attract new customers--good look and keep those yards stain free (and I thought I had a messy job)...

Target your customers, provide a good service to them and they will spread the word around. Alternatively you can use advertisment (the popular means in your community) to get word across.
